Facts
- Local or general anesthesia
- Outpatient procedure or One-day surgery
- Operation takes aprox 4 hours
- Recovery after 4 days
Hair transplantation (replacement) is currently provided under local anesthesia, in some cases sedation or general anesthesia (rarely) is used. The operation lasts 4 - 8 hours.
Donor and recipient areas:
- Donor areas are places where hair follicles are taken and prepared as grafts.
- Recipient areas are places with a lack of hair.
We can distinguish two kinds of hair harvesting:
- Hair is taken as whole strips from which the hair is prepared (FUT).
- Hair is harvested in small groups with hair follicles (FUE).
Harvesting can be provided with multiblade knive or using a special punching device. The hairstyle must be shortened to about 1-2 millimeters so that the hair can be harvested.
Other surgical methods include flap surgery (elevating hair-bearing skin and moving it into bald places) or scalp reduction (surgical excision of small part of bald skin at the edge of hair line).
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) means harvesting hair as strips (removed from the back of the head) and then cutting them into small groups (hair grafts) and transplanting them to recipient sites.
The scar and remaining hair will hide the removed strip at the back of the head.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) means harvesting the hair as a single graft (small groups) and then transplating it directly to the donor sites.
After the surgery a turban-style dressing is made and you can go back to work in 2-4 days.
Hair grafts will fall out and start growing again (regrow after 3 months).
